To Give Life To History–With Your Support
2017 was an exciting year for Cliveden. Read below for more information on how you can support us!
New Discoveries at Cliveden!
We recently discovered a bake oven in the Kitchen Dependency! In a space that is integral to the function of a household, learning about the kitchen layout and the people who used it shapes our understanding of life at Cliveden.
Help continue architectural discovery at Cliveden by donating here. We know this building has a lot of stories to tell–we just have to find them all!
Help Preserve Cliveden by Shopping!
In 2017, Cliveden restored the exterior woodwork, windows and doors of the Main House and the Dependencies. The National Trust for Historic Preservation provided funding for this project. Using historic paint analysis, the project returned the earliest parts of the Main House and Dependencies to their 18th century paint colors, including dark brown shutters and doors with lead white trim on the Main House, and light ochre trim on the front elevations of the Dependencies.
Help preserve Cliveden when you shop for the holidays! You can support our preservation efforts when you shop on AmazonSmile–simply designate Cliveden as your nonprofit charitable organization and Amazon will automatically contribute. The more you shop, the more they give! You can also buy gifts from our Amazon Wish List to directly support our work. We are registered as Cliveden of the National Trust. Thank you!
Join in the Conversation!
For the first time, Cliveden hosted a traveling exhibition. Fire & Freedom: Food and Enslavement in Early America, that detailed the relationship between food and power. Exhibit Curator, Dr. Pysche Williams-Forson, brought this relationship into a Cliveden context earlier this year in a Cliveden Conversation.
Coming to a Cliveden Conversation helps expand our interpretation and we want your input! We have three Conversations planned for Spring 2018–stay tuned for more details. Come out and be a part of the conversation!
We Need Your Help!
The grounds at Cliveden came alive this year at two free family-friendly community festivals. Mt. Airy Day and the Revolutionary Germantown Festival are moments when our neighbors come to Cliveden by the thousands to experience culture and history together.

New Programming in 2018!
As a continuation of Cliveden’s Living Kitchens project, we are proud to present the Cliveden Food Chain, a further exploration of of the Chew Family’s role in Mid-Atlantic enslavement. In addition to Cliveden Conversations, we will also host food demonstrations by Michael Twitty and a jazz concert by Warren Oree, both of which are inspired by Food Chain research.
Don’t forget–the last day to donate to Cliveden and receive free admission to a Cliveden Food Chain program is December 31! Please consider making your end-of-the-year gift in 2017. Your support makes Cliveden possible.
Happy New Year!
Cliveden has all kinds of programming set for 2018. We can’t wait to introduce the Cliveden Food Chain programs. Also, please look for these dynamic programs in 2018: Cliveden Conversations, Mt. Airy Day, Liberty to Go to See, and the Revolutionary Germantown Festival. Come join us at our events in the New Year!
Happy New Year! Thank you for all your support in 2017 and we hope to see you in 2018!
